    The Chemical, Earth, and Life Sciences Directorate (ALDCELS) is home to three divisions with twelve capability-focused groups that support global security, national missions, and local communities.

    The Chemistry, Bioscience, and Earth and Environmental Sciences divisions have key capabilities that directly support critical outcomes of the Lab Agenda. Our researchers push the bounds of scientific understanding to advance initiatives in biosecurity, climate and clean energy, and computational methods. With a commitment to simultaneous excellence, ALDCELS delivers scientific discoveries and technical innovations that advance research frontiers.

    • Chemistry

      The Chemistry Division supports national security with innovative chemical science and technology to advance energy research, weapons science, isotope production, and human health.

    • Bioscience

      The Bioscience Division conducts cutting-edge research in biosurveillance, chemical & biological forensics, advanced biofuels, and the impacts of climate change on biomes.

    • Earth and Environmental Science

      The Earth and Environmental Science Division is at the forefront of global security, sustainable energy, and climate science, exploring environmental systems to predict climate effects and carbon capture to support clean energy.

    Applied Energy Program

    The Science Program Office of Applied Energy (SPO-AE) interfaces between DOE program offices, applied-energy stakeholders and LANL’s scientific and engineering experts to develop new technologies for utilizing energy with improved efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

    The Applied Energy program conducts research in many areas, including fuel-cells bioscience, the energy grid, and geothermal resources.
