Target Audience

Individuals that perform, manage, or supervise neutron based nondestructive assay (NDA) techniques. Auditors, regulators, and policy makers may also benefit from attending this course.

Objectives

To provide the participant with in-depth knowledge of the major neutron NDA techniques used domestically for MC&A measurements of bulk special nuclear material (SNM) and in international safeguards.

Topics

  • Fundamental principles of neutron detection
  • Passive neutron coincidence counting of bulk plutonium
  • Multiplicity counting of bulk plutonium
  • Active Neutron Coincidence Counting of bulk uranium and fresh fuel assemblies.
  • Waste characterization using neutron counting.

Previous Course Title: Advanced Neutron NDA Techniques (MCA-342)

4.5 days

Typical Course Format

Monday-Thursday, 8:30AM to 5:00PM and Friday, 8:30AM to 12:00PM.

A schedule will be provided on the first day of the course. Coffee, tea, and water will be available during the morning and afternoon breaks.  An option for attending a no-host lunch at the training site will be provided for all students. The anticipated cost for these lunches will be approximately $5-10/person. The money will be collected on the day the lunch is served.

We will be entering into the laboratory to perform some measurements. For safety purposes, please be sure to wear closed toe shoes.
